Coolinary Camp

This special, fantastic, fun and exciting Coolinary Specialty Camp will successfully cultivate culinary curiosity in campers, as they learn to prepare, eat and share yummy, healthy, delicious, nutritional and sustainable foods.  Kids love to sample as they cook, and Sticky Fingers Cooking instructors have learned the secrets inspiring young palates to explore the many delights of unique and tasty combinations of a nutritious varieties of vegetables, grains and fruits not always found on children’s plates.

The curriculum uses the thrill of cooking to expand each camper’s taste for of healthy, seasonal food, and is specifically designed to let little chefs explore and excel!  While touching and tasting, campers use all their senses to cultivate a taste for eating nutritiously and seasonally abundant whole foods.

The fun, engaging and creative Coolinary cooking instructors add a sense of fun and excitement as they combine the love of cooking with nutritional information, jokes, geography, math skills and history to inspire a lifetime love of healthy family cooking! Campers will take pride in practicing a culinary skill, and will get to enjoy the fruits (or vegetables) of their labor at the end of each class.

By the end of Coolinary Camp, the campers (and their grown-ups) will have online access to a collection of unique Sticky Fingers recipes to share – and repeat – with their families at home.  Note: Any and all dietary restrictions can and will be accommodated.

The camp is at Hill Middle School at 4th and Clermont.

The camp is open to boys and girls ages 5-10.

Dance Camp

Dream BIG Dance has exploded thanks to our very own Jada Blankenship, choreographer extraordinaire!  After only one summer she has become somewhat of an icon at Dream BIG.

Under Jada’s leadership, each day will offer a different dance style and theme including musical theater, hip hop, jazz and poms.  Campers will dress up and even get to do their own music video! Friday will be a culmination of the week with a live performance.

Jada has her degree in Dance Performance from the University of Central Oklahoma. She currently teaches at Miller’s Dance Studio and performs for a company coincidentally called Dream Project, which was established to fulfill the dreams of dancers in the Denver community by helping local charities.   Jada danced for the Oklahoma Yard Dawgs, an Arena Football team, and performed with Oklahoma City’s only professional theater company, Lyric Theater.

The camp is located at Dancing the Soul, 950 Jersey Street

The camp is open to boys and girls ages 6-10.

The camp runs from Monday, August 12 – Friday, August 16, 2013 1pm-4pm.

Camp tuition is $260.

Computer Camp – Technology

Dream BIG Day Camp has joined forces with Open World Learning to create Dream World, which focuses on engaging youth through a fun and challenging technology program called Scratch. Campers in Dream World will learn advanced technology skills that include:

*animation

*internet research

*multi-media presentation

*game design

*computer programming.

The curriculum allows the participants to express their creativity and ingenuity as they use software to create personally meaningful and unique projects.  Each camper will get hands on instruction and have lots of fun navigating new terrain on a computer.

Sports Camps

BASEBALL CAMP

Dream BIG Baseball Camp will be under the excellent leadership of Mario Vetanze, Sam Makovsky and Brad Bonavida.

Mario is a Group Leader at Dream BIG and was All-Conference at Grandview High School where the team was ranked #1 in Colorado.  He volunteered at several camps and, as an undergraduate student at CU, coached his high school freshman team to the state finals. He is loaded with energy and has a tremendous rapport with the campers! Mario coached at our baseball camp in 2011.

Sam played at Thomas Jefferson High School as a second baseman, shortstop and pitcher. They finished in the top ten every season he was there. He still plays competitively today.  He coached the 13-15 year old All Stars for the Centennial Baseball League, Southeast Denver Baseball League, and South Boulder Baseball League. Three of the teams he coached won their respective leagues. He also coached youngsters at Denver Jewish Day School and Dream BIG Day Camp where he is now a Group Leader.

Brad, now an undergrad at CSU, played four years of baseball at 5A Ralston Valley High School where his team made it to the state finals in his senior year.  He also competed in the “Playball” competitive club organization where he would compete against many junior colleges.  Brad played first base, outfield and pitcher. He also coached youth in the YMCA as well as boys and girls at Dream BIG in the summers of 2011 and 2012.

Each and every child will get the proper attention and instruction so that they can improve and have tons of fun at camp!  Please bring a water bottle and glove and wear baseball cap and cleats.

The camp is located at Crestmoor Park at 1st Avenue and Monaco Parkway.

BASKETBALL CAMP

We are excited to welcome Dream BIG Day Camp’s new Boys/Girls Basketball Camp Directors, Steve Ledesma and Caley Dow from Regis University!

Steve Ledesma aspires to be an NCAA head coach one day. He is currently the assistant coach for his Alma Mater men’s basketball team at Regis University. He is no stranger to youth coaching, serving as a camp counselor for the past six years at several different universities including the University of Arizona, Gonzaga, and the University of San Diego. As an instructor, Ledesma strongly emphasizes the fundamentals of basketball to his students. For the past three years he has worked with kids between the ages of 5-17 years and with Denver’s Special Olympics. He is committed to helping young people develop into responsible, enthusiastic, and caring members of society. Ledesma is a passionate individual who loves to instill fun and energy in those around him. He is currently working on his master’s degree in Organizational Leadership at Regis University.

Caley Dow currently serves as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team at Regis University where she is also pursuing her Master’s in Organizational Leadership. She began her college basketball career at the University of Colorado-Boulder while earning her undergraduate degree in Economics and Spanish from CU in 2009. In 2012 she completed her basketball career at Metro State University. Prior to joining Dream BIG Day Camp, Caley has worked extensively with children both on and off the court. She has enjoyed working at several local basketball camps including the CU Women’s Basketball Camp, UNC Team Camp, Metro State Team Camp, and Gold Crown/Bill Hanzlik Basketball Camp. She has also coached youth teams for the YMCA/Gold Crown and served as a private skills coach in the Boulder area. Her goal is to share her passion for the sport by providing engaging activities in an inviting atmosphere so that participants have the opportunity to grow as athletes and individuals.

 Nugget Head Coach George Karl has been a regular visitor.

LACROSSE CAMP – BOYS

We are excited to welcome Kyle Nielsen to Dream BIG Day Camp as our new boys lacrosse director. Kyle currently coaches lacrosse with the Mustang Sports Club. He grew up playing lacrosse in Southern California and played college ball at Brigham Young University.

Kyle has coached for a number of years, everyone from beginners to varsity players. He ran his own club program while living in Utah and is still dedicated to their tournament play. While living in Louisville, he also taught 3rd – 11th graders in weekly private and group lessons.  Kyle can also be found coaching at Bill Tierney’s DU Youth Lacrosse Camp each summer.

Kyle is passionate about players who try hard and care about improving on and off the field. He hopes to pass on his positive attitude and excitement for lacrosse, through a fun coaching style, that encourages kids to learn new things. We’re excited to welcome Kyle to the director ranks and think he exudes the Dream BIG warm inner fuzzy glow!

A player from the Colorado Mammoth or the Denver Outlaws typically coaches for a day.

SOCCER CAMP

We are very excited that Ed Callaghan is heading the Dream BIG Soccer Camp again!  Ed brings a wealth of experience with him and has run week long soccer camps in Denver for several years (that’s how we met him as he coached our own children!). He has a wonderful way with children and instills a real love for the game of soccer. Ed and his coaches, who primarily hail from the UK, make sure the youngsters have a great time while improving their skills dramatically.

Ed has coached more than 5,000 children through his soccer camps which he has run for more than 15 years throughout the US.  Ed won two national championships while in college and played semi-professionally in England. He was most recently the Director of Coaching for the Arizona Soccer Club as he lives with his wife and three children just outside of Phoenix. 

Soccer Camp is located at Cranmer Park at 3rd Avenue and Bellaire Street.

Soccer Camp is for boys and girls ages 5-10.

TAE KWON DO CAMP

Master Cam’s Ninja Jam

Returning for his second year at Dream BIG Day Camp, Cameron Weber aka “Master Cam” is a 4th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and has been practicing this martial art form for fifteen years. He has seven years of extensive teaching experience in a Dojang down south. Master Cam currently won the 2013 Collegiate National Taekwondo Championship (hosted at the Olympic Training Center) and made the 2013 US National Collegiate Taekwondo Team! He is ranked second in the nation for Olympic style sparring. Not only does he have comprehensive experience with martial arts, but he has a passion for teaching children and spreading his love of Tae Kwon Do. He has many fun surprises up his sleeve to ensure kids of all ages and abilities to have a blast!

This camp includes learning more advanced Tae Kwon Do techniques, working with padded Nunchuks, self defense maneuvers and breaking a real board at the end of the week!
